Baghdatis is a Smash Around the World (Video).

January 19, 2012

What is it about the Australian Open and viral racquet smashes?

Last year it was Aggie Radwanska’s now famous “boomerang” racquet but this year everybody is getting a repeat performance of Marcos Baghdatis’s now legendary four stick smash during his early round match against Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka. The video has been played during newscasts all around the world and will likely end up being one of the most viewed tennis clips all year.

Baghdatis was fined $1250 for the incident but now there’s a report coming out of Forbes.com that his anger may have been aimed at the racquet company Technifibre who revealed that they are no longer sponsoring the Cypriot star. Click here to read the article.

Baghdatis, who lost to Wawrinka, will likely end up getting another racquet deal, though his new sponsor may insist that if he feels like breaking another expensive stick, he should take a deep breath and remember, hey, it’s not the racquet’s fault. Perhaps he should hire someone who earned a psychology degree online so he can work out his issues, whatever they may be.
