While Rafael Nadal jets on down to South Africa to root for Spain in the World Cup finals as his Spanish Davis Cup teammates stay at home to face off against France this weekend, another former world No. 1 (but still the No. 1 tennis hottie for many) Marat Safin is serving as hitting partner for his Russian Davis Cup team in their effort against Argentina. And though Safin in a recent interview with RT said he “doesn’t miss tennis at all”, Safin is keeping very busy with other sports activities.
In his interview, Safin discusses his work trying to build a new tennis academy in Russia along with serving on the Russian Olympic committee. But probably his most interesting comment was when he says he doesn’t watch much tennis on television anymore as the “same players keep getting to the later stages.” Not sure who he means considering a certain Swiss star hasn’t been showing up lately on the final weekend of events lately. In any event, it’s nice to see Safin back on the courts in some capacity and I’m sure his diehard fans hope for more sightings outside of Moscow soon. Perhaps New York for the U.S. Open?
