New Promos For Wimbledon Hit the Streets with Murray.

June 17, 2010

With Wimbledon starting up next week, it’s always interesting to take a peek and how the networks promote their coverage of the event with teaser promos. The BBC has just started playing their teaser ad and although it’s very catchy, I’m not quite sure what the ultimate message is. Meanwhile, Head racquets has launched another set of viral videos, this time with Andy Murray doing his best to bounce around London.

Although the BBC teaser contains effective animation, it’s the theme music of “A Beautiful Morning” by the Rascals that throws me off. I get the whole tie-in with the Centre Court roof opening up to reveal an almost too perfect sunny day, as if the All England Club moved to Los Angeles for two weeks as a last ditch attempt to have perfect weather for the fortnight, but the music makes it feel like the viewer will be treated to a lazy, fun day at the beach rather than watching tennis. If I were the creative director, I would have picked a song, still with the same beat, but performed by someone in this century. Perhaps Adele?

Meanwhile, Andy Murray takes to the streets of London in a new promo for Head racquets that has him hitting tennis balls in several alleyways before trying some circus style tricks on a rooftop overlooking the heart of the city. Although it’s hard to tell if there’s some clever editing involved or not, the paintball logo sequence at the end seems to finally loosen Murray up enough to crack a decent smile. Overall it’s a fun piece that will definitely get his fans fired up for the event.

Perhaps Murray should try paintballing a few strokes to help loosen him up before he steps onto the pressure cooker of Centre Court for each of his matches next week. Couldn’t hurt.

(Special Thanks to Head Tennis for providing the Murray video footage)
