Organizers of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells must be breathing a little easier after seeing the women’s semifinal lineup today considering all of the early round losses from some of the big names on the WTA tour.
Each of the four players left know they have a golden opportunity not only to have a breakthrough title win, but perhaps a chance to get added to the list of stars who can go by one name only.
Jelena Jankovic vs. Sam Stosur
Of all the players still left, Jankovic needs to win this title the most. Her recent lack of big results, especially at the Slams, has made her star status appear suspect. J.J. goes up against Stosur who cracks the top 10 for the first time in her career. Stosur’s all-court game should challenge Jankovic, especially on J.J.’s serve. But the moment could get to Stosur as she tends to get error-prone when it’s tight.
Jankovic leads their head to head 2-0, but they last played back in 2007 when Stosur was not the player she is today. It will probably get tight and maybe even a third set, but I like Jankovic to recognize the moment and claim it for herself.
Caroline Wozniacki vs. Agnieska Radwanksa
Best friends on and off court with the winner apparently owing the loser dinner, this matchup could come down to nerves as well. Radwanksa is probably a bit of surprise as she benefitted from Justine Henin’s early dismissal from the event. But the Polish player has not dropped a set and used her deft hands at net to take out Elena Dementieva last round.
Wozniacki has not had an easy time of it at Indian Wells as she had to endure a long, thrilling match against Zheng Jie. But she’s healthy more or less and also knows if she wins, she will move up to No.2 in the world. Radwanksa and Wozniacki are 1-1 lifetime, but haven’t played each other in a long time. I like Wozniacki to take this in two sets so long as she doesn’t think too much on who she’s playing on the other side of the court.
