Looks like Martina and Steffi still have what it takes. I just checked this morning and looks like tickets for the Friday, March 12th evening session of Indian Wells featuring the “Hit for Haiti” session are sold out. You might be able to find a box seat or perhaps some through the usual ticket sites, but I wouldn’t count on it.
Interest increased when it was announced earlier this week that a women’s doubles match would take place featuring Martina Navratilova and Justine Henin taking on Stefanie Graf and Lindsay Davenport. Yes, Stefanie Graf wants to be referred to by her full name now.
The event, sponsored by Oracle whose founder Larry Ellison recently purchased the entire Indian Wells event, has set a fundraising goal of $1 million dollars to go to the American Red Cross and other efforts for Haiti relief. The men’s match will feature Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Rafael Nadal and, although it’s still somewhat TBD, Roger Federer.
“Oracle is proud to participate in fundraising efforts to benefit the relief efforts in Haiti,” said Oracle CEO Larry Ellison. “It is impressive to see this remarkable line up of athletes work together to raise much-needed funds for Haiti. Our hope is to hold an event that supports relief efforts and continues to raise the visibility for how Haiti needs the world’s help.”
If you can’t get to Indian Wells, Tennis Channel will broadcast the event starting at 7:30pm. Please check local listings. For more information, click here.
And, of course, let’s not forget efforts going on to help those suffering from the recent earthquake in Chile. The Davis Cup tie there between Chile and Israel was delayed until Saturday although some still think it should be postponed. Fernando Gonzalez issued this video appeal.
