Ernests Gulbis spoiled Ivo Karlovic’s 31st birthday today by taking his first ever ATP title with an easy 6-2, 6-3 win over Karlovic at the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships.
Gulbis, who has longed be touted as the next big thing, finally put it together this week for his first ever title. With the win and 250 ranking points, he will move back into the top 50.
The 21-year-old from Latvia expressed great pride in the win as he is the first Latvian ever to win an ATP title.
“Everything what I do now is first time for my country,” said Gulbis. “Of course it’s great. I hope it’s positive. I hope much more players will start to practise in Latvia. It’s good for tennis in Latvia. They see that a guy from Latvia also can make it and win an ATP World Tour event.”
Being of Latvian heritage myself, I have to say I’m pleased that Gulbis looks like he’s finally getting himself together after a long two year struggle of less than stellar results. Now if he can only find himself a proper hairdo…
