Venus Williams displayed classic form on her way to repeating as champion of the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Victoria Azarenka.
Hitting laser-like passing shots and running down balls that made Azarenka smile at how well Venus was playing, Venus put the pressure on Azarenka all match long. Azarenka did fight back in the first set, getting to a break point when Venus was serving for it at 5-3. But Venus quickly closed the door serving out the set and never looked back.

With the win, Williams earns her 42nd career WTA title, the most ever among active players with Justine Henin one behind at 41 wins.
Williams after the match acknowledged the week’s events especially in light of Shahar Peer’s semifinal run and all the extra security provided for her.
“Last year we had issues with everyone being included, and we were excited when Andy Ram was able to play. This year Shahar Peer was included. That’s great to show the spirit of inclusion and equality. I know in this part of the world they love having sporting events, and I know Dubai wants to be the sporting capital of the world. But with the spirit, more events can come here. It brings a better future to this area of the world. They put on such a great event here so it’s wonderful to be able to see this grow.”
