Davydenko & Soderling Set Up Semifinal Clash in Rotterdam.

February 12, 2010

Despite Nikolay Davydenko’s hiccup at the Australian Open when he was up a set and almost two breaks to Roger Federer before blowing the match in four sets, “Kolya” resumed his almost cruise control winning ways with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Jürgen Melzer at the ABN ARMO Championship. He will next face Robin Soderling who won easily as well against Julien Benneteau 6-0, 6-1.

Even though the Swede is 6-4 lifetime against the Russian, Davydenko won their last encounter at the ATP World Tour Championships in London. I have a feeling Soderling will really want to win this one and prove he’s still in the mix with the top guys after his own Aussie Open ended early in the first round.

Also coming through in the quarterfinals today was Mikhail Youzhny with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 win over Gael Monfils in a three hour match that saw Monfils’ flashy shotmaking, though crowd pleasing, come up a little short against the “tank” that is Youzhny who won the event back in 2007. Youzhny will face Novak Djokovic in the semifinals.

And yes, Soderling is baring his teeth in this shot. Perhaps he should get a new nickname of “Vlad” instead of “Sod”?
