No, it’s not a repeat broadcast of the Beijing Olympics. Instead the feisty play of two of China’s top players in the quarterfinals created a unique mix for this year’s Australian Open semifinals.
Henin handled Nadia Petrova in straight sets while Serena battled herself against Victoria Azarenka whose steady play found her up 6-4, 4-0 before Serena decided to hit away and ended up running away with it 6-1 in the third set. The inevitable may seem apparent, but never expect it from the most unpredictable of the Grand Slams.
Jie Zheng vs. Justine Henin.
Henin has built momentum throughout the event but she’s struggled in all of her matches, either with her serve, her body or her nerves. Now in the semis, Henin should feel more free to swing away. Jie Zheng, who made the Wimbledon’s semis two years ago, will run every ball down and force Henin to hit winners. Remember back in 2007 when Henin was supposed to meet Venus in the finals, but lost to a then unknown Marion Bartoli? The same could happen here if Henin doesn’t treat her opponent with care. It could get messy and tight, but Henin won’t make the same mistake again. Henin in three.
Na Li vs. Serena Williams.
Venus Williams should be playing against her little sister but blew a 6-2, 5-3 lead against the veteran Chinese player. Li does have a win against Serena, but Serena’s impressive comeback against Victoria Azarenka proved she is ready to defend her title. Both players will be tired and a little beat up having played yesterday, but Serena always seems to raise her game when she sense another title, and, when she plays the person who beat her sister in the last round. Serena in two sets.
