Day 2 Australian Open – Roger’s Return.

January 18, 2010

A quick look at Day 2 of the Australian Open which is still trying to catch up from yesterday after the off and on rain showers disrupted play. Of course, everyone is still buzzing over Maria Kirilenko’s upset over Maria Sharapova. Even though Sharapova’s serve looked better, it was those 65+ unforced errors that did her in along with, some would say, her lack of match experience going in.

Serena Williams and Roger Federer take the court today and I wouldn’t expect any surprises out of their matches although Igor Andreev will be a tough task for Federer in the first round.

Expect the unexpected when Venus Williams takes on Lucie Safarova. Venus is another player that we haven’t seen lately so will be interesting to see how the knee holds up.

Match of the day could be Richard Gasquet against Mikhail Youzhny. That could be a five setter for sure, although I’m liking Gasquet after his Sydney run.

Finally, the night matches feature the return of Lleyton Hewitt against Richard Hocevar. I like Hewitt here but he’s going to have really up his game if he takes on Federer later on in the third round at the Australian Open.
