Weekend Wrap Up – Isner Wins First ATP Title.

January 16, 2010

Just a quick look at the finals of the remaining events in the Australian Open series and the exhibition matches that took place before play gets underway in Melbourne tomorrow.

Marcos Baghdatis won his second back to back event (he won Stockholm earlier) by defeating Richard Gasquet 6-4, 7-6(2) at the Medibank International in Sydney. Of course the crowd, full of many Cypriot supporters, went nuts. Baghdatis is sort of an unofficial Aussie after his Finalist run at the AO a few years ago so watch out for him. Also nice to see Gasquet back in the winner’s circle again. Looks like he has put his past behind him.

Great win for John Isner, the 6 foot 9 American, who won his first ATP Tour title by winning Auckland over Arnaud Clement 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (2) saving one match point in the process. He will possibly face Nadal in the third round of the AO.

Alona Bondarenko defeated Shahar Peer 6-2, 6-4 to win the Hobart event for her second WTA title.

In exhibition news, Fernando Verdasco won the Kooyong warm-up over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-5, 6-3 while perhaps the biggest news out of Kooyong was rising Aussie teenager Bernard Tomic’s win over Novak Djokovic in a hit-out match 6-4 3-6 7-5.

Djokovic praised Tomic’s talent afterwards and although I don’t like to read anything anything into these types of scores, Tomic may be ready to finally breakout this year. He plays Guilliame Rufin in the first round.
