In a replay of last year’s final at the Medibank International in Sydney, Elena Dementieva found success a second time with an easy two set win over No. 2 Dinara Safina 6-3, 6-2.
Safina started slow again falling down 0-5 in the first set. Although she managed to break back once, Dementieva easily closed out the first set after she hit a down the line forehand that just clipped the baseline.
Safina had a chance to break at 1-2 but netted a backhand return and after that the match was pretty much done.

Dementieva will now face Victoria Azarenka in the semis after she prevailed in a three set win over Dominika Cibulkova. Serena Williams will take on Aravane Rezail in the other semifinal.
Safina’s slow starts at Sydney is not a good sign for her as she heads over to Melbourne. At this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if she offers another repeat of her U.S. Open Misery Tour down under.
