Wickmayer in Aussie Open Qualies Despite Top 20 Ranking.

January 11, 2010

According to the Australian Open’s website, Yanina Wickmayer must go through qualifying to get into the main draw of the Grand Slam event.

Wickmayer, currently ranked a career high of 16 after winning Auckland last week, got into this mess when she endured a potential year-long ban from the Flemish Anti-Doping Tribunal for not accurately adhering to the “whereabouts” rule for drug tests.

The ban was overturned in late December but too late for Wickmayer to officially enter the Australian Open. After her wildcard entry was denied her only other choice was to enter the qualies which start on Wednesday.

Hard to stay if this will affect Wickmayer’s chances in Melbourne, but if Wickmayer can pull off three wins, she would actually be the only women coming into the event with something of a true winning streak.
