Sunday Wrap-Up: Querrey and Bartoli Win.

August 2, 2009

Just a quick wrap-up of the two hard court tournaments finishing up this week.

Sam Querrey, fresh off of his mild upset of Tommy Hass, won the L.A. Tennis Open. He defeated qualifier and friend Carsten Ball 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.

This is Querrey’s third straight final and first ATP title this year. His consistent play should get him into the the top 25 by U.S. Open time. He is also now the third highest ranked U.S. Men’s player after Andy Roddick and James Blake.

Marion Bartoli, the feisty Frenchwoman, earned her second title of the year winning the Bank of the West event. She won a hard fought three set slugfest against Venus Williams 6-2, 5-7, 6-4.

I didn’t watch the match but kept track of the scoring. Bartoli had a chance to serve it out in the second set but lost serve and then double faulted again on set point to lost the set. But Bartoli broke early in the third and held on to win.

This has to be Bartoli’s best win of the year, maybe her career. Say what you will about her odd training habits and that she doesn’t have the most svelte figure in the game. But her serve has improved tremendously and she always believes she can win any match. So Kudos to Bartoli on a great tournament.

I might head down to the Women’s L.A. Tennis Open starting this week, so be sure to check my updates.
